Today we went for a talk at the Zening Resort in Latchi, where a collection of local restaurant/ hotel owners gathered with the town mayor to discuss prospects of increasing tourism in the area. Green and sustainable ideas were on the agenda as well as Farmers’ Markets and arts festivals. All very inspirational and inciting dialogue.
There are two key issues that need to be addressed in order to lift this magical part of the island to a level that will appeal to the new, more critical, tourist: Easy connections to the airports and cleaning up the area. There are several local volunteer groups such as the diligent Akamas Cleanup Team – ACT, who have been tidying the area since 2012, but no overall coordinated efforts. It seems everyone agrees this is a serious problem. As one attendant stated: “If you invite guests to your home – you clean your house”… And really the solution is simple. It’s just a question of getting started.
I returned home in time to collect a couple of items from our little beach and enjoy an enchanting sunset over the lost & found box.
